A long-awaited and much anticipated colletion of nearly 800 poems from more than fifty of the most intriguing and important Irish poets writing since World War II, Wes Davis's An Anthology of Modern Irish Poetry is the most comprehensive work of its kind.
The anthology, arranged in order of birth, surveys a broad range of poets from the Republic of Ireland and the North, including writers known primarily for work in other fields-- Samuel Beckett and Aidan Carl Mathews, for instance-- as well as poets who write primarily in Gaelic, like Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, and have gained attention in the United States through translation by the likes of Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon; and still others whose work has not been widely available in English translation, such as Sean O Riordain and Cathal O Searcaigh.
Davis opens the work with a substantial introduction on the history of modern Irish poetry, and accompanying each poet's selections is a headnote providing historical overview, informative short essays on the writer, and helpful notes.
An Anthlology of Modern Irish Poetry brings attention to the work of great poets-- both well known and less so-- as well as to Irish history and literature.
