COMING THIS AUTUMN: a book that combines the work of two great Irish naturalists
“In great collaborations, the concept of super-additivity comes to
pass where the final product is somehow greater than the sum of its
constituent parts. This is what they have managed to do here. It’s
something that is rarely achieved. And it’s quite wonderful.”
Colin Stafford-Johnson, filmmaker and TV presenter
“A unique collaboration...this book is a timeless treasure trove of
words and images filled with love and beauty.”
Richard Nairn, ecologist and nature writer
On Land and Water combines the work of photographer Sheena Jolley and nature poet D. J. O’Sullivan.
Sheena Jolley has gained a huge international reputation for her photographs of wildlife and will be well known to Irish television viewers as a judge on RTÉ’s “Eye on Nature” photo competition.
D. J. O’Sullivan was a lighthouse keeper and a noted naturalist who published two acclaimed volumes of poetry and won the first Poetry Ireland Award in 1980. He also wrote a daily nature column in The Irish Press for over forty years.
Sheena has been fascinated for a long time by D.J.’s ability to write about nature in a deeply
lyrical fashion without ever sacrificing the accuracy of his observations. On Land and Water is the culmination of her long-held ambition to give photographic expression to his work.
The book’s 200 photographs capture interesting, often fleeting, moments and in many cases reflect a strong sense of intimacy with their subjects. Each image reflects the text of a particular poem and is accompanied by a background note by Sheena.
The book serves as an important testament to the richness of Irish wildlife and also as a timely reminder of the many threats it faces and of the need for conservation.

“The joy evoked in the readers who look at the images throughout the book, and who are uplifted by O’Sullivans words, must inevitably ensure that they are motivated to call stop to the ceaseless, careless destruction. This book is a wonderful panegyric to D.J O Sullivan and his lifetime of wildlife observations and writings. It is up to us all now to make sure that it does not become a historical record of how wildlife once was, but rather, that it is a clarion call to protect our biodiversity.”— from the introduction by Éanna Ní Lamhna
